WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD REQUIRE UNIFORMS
The Government
Students seem to focus mainly on how uniforms can impact competitiveness about clothing, but governments central idea of why school uniforms should be mandated revolves around the idea of safety. In Suitland, Maryland, a young man was killed over a pair of sneakers that he owned and refused to willingly give up to the other students who stole them from him. This is only one instance of something like this happening, that is why many government leaders and government departments see school uniforms as a way to keep kids safer in schools.
In a study performed in 2010 it shows that schools that required uniforms had 12 percent less firearm related incidents and 15 percent less drug related occurrences than schools that lack uniforms. The reduction of firearm incidents can be attributed to the fact that uniforms make it harder to conceal weapons under one’s clothing. Similarly, there was a 2007 study that discovered that schools without school uniforms typically had more instances of sexual harassment.
The US Department of Education and President Bill Clinton both directly supported school uniforms over concerns of safety. The US Department of Education in their manual on school uniforms stated that wearing school uniforms stops gang members that attends school from wearing their gang colors, and clothing that contain their gang insignias. Bill Clinton similarly claimed that school uniforms will increase safety in schools and that safety should be the main concerns of the schools.
