The U.S. Department of Education's manual on school uniforms is a manual or guide created by the Department of Education with the help of local school communities and the U.S. Department of Justice for local school communities. Within the manual it describes the appropriate ways and methods to incorporate school uniforms within school, and lists how and why school uniforms can positively impact school communities. It also describes the legality of school uniforms in America. Within the manual there are also a plethora of statistics about the use of school uniforms in the American public school system, such as statistics on school uniforms by region.

Brunsma's selection discusses in depth the argument of whether or not schools should require uniforms or not. He discusses almost every facet of the argument ranging from the social to legal to political aspects. He defines the aspect from the both sides of the issue, and talks about how those sides have changed over time, by using research that he himself conducted and recorded. He analyzes how the argument has impacted school systems and why it is so important. All the information within the book is based off of information from contributors such as the author, who all have years of experience within the field of education.

He highlights the history of school uniforms from when they first started to the present, and notes what they mean to society, and how their meaning changes as time progresses. Brunsma also discusses how the law and dress codes correlate, and the questions people have concerning the correlation of the two, such as if school uniforms should be legal at all and whether of not wearing uniform is in the constitutional rights of the students, and lastly he also dives deeply into how school uniforms affect any school environment.

Craik not only discusses why she believes uniforms in school encourages conformity, but also extends the discussion into aspects of life such as workplaces, the military, religious groups, and sports teams. Craik continues to ask questions about uniforms, such as why life environments require uniforms, and how do uniforms effect people in terms of individualism, and comes up with her own unique explanations and answers for each one.

He looks at both sides of the issue and attempts to investigate which side is more preferable than the other, with no real intend of deciphering which side is better, but instead with the purpose of just trying to start a conversation about the topic. Molnar includes the various aspects of the issue and uses and explores broad examples within the issue.
